On 3rd July 2023, the Executive Directorate for Partnerships & Planning (EDPP), INTERPOL General Secretariat, initiated the meeting on Effective Multilateral Policing Architecture Against Global Threats – Working Group on Strategic Aspects of Global Policing Architecture.
This Global Policing Goal drafting
session was held in Lyon in person on Monday 3rd July 2023, and participated by the AFRIPOL, Arab Interior Ministers’ Council (AIMC), AMERIPOL, CARICOM IMPACS, GCCPOL, EUROPOL, ECO, SCO RATS and the European Border and Coast Guard Agency – Frontex.
In line with the Global Policing Goals that have been highlighted during previous online meetings, constructive discussions with a more details set of cross-cutting foundational themes are considered beneficial. INTERPOL has highlighted the theme of Security as a foundation for sustainable development. Today’s security challenges are interconnected and global. More than ever, there is a need for multilateral police cooperation to address the evolving and complex threats facing the world. As the only police organization that works at the global level, INTERPOL’s unique role is to continue to enable law enforcement in 195 member countries to work together to make the world a safer place.
INTERPOL’s policing capabilities and support are delivered worldwide through four global crime-are programmes addressing threats that are among the most pressing today such as counter-terrorism, cybercrime, financial crime and anti-corruption, and organized and emerging crime.
INTERPOL has developed a set of seven Global Policing Goals, addressing a range of issues related to crime and security. Aligned with the United Nations 2023 Agenda for Sustainable Development and related to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Global Policing Goals shape how the global law enforcement community works together to create a safer world. The goals are universal, ambitious and underpinned by collective action. These goals were originally approved in 2017 by INTERPOL’s member countries at the 86th General Assembly session in Beijing, China.
The GPGs, each focusing on a crime-area or a global threat, are underpinned by cross-cutting foundational themes, each of which impacts the operationalization of the GPGs. These themes include:
i.Good governance, rule of law and respect for human rights
ii.Collaboration and partnerships
iii.Data and information sharing
iv.Innovation and digitalization
v.Financial crime as an enabler
All the sharing, inputs, and suggestions from the stakeholders and participants have been noted and managed by the Executive Directorate for Partnership and Planning of INTERPOL (EDPP) and are to be reviewed to support the next Edition of the Dialogue which was scheduled for 25th to 26th October 2023 in Abu Dhabi and hosted by GCCPOL.
