On April 9, 2024, the ASEANAPOL Secretariat, in partnership with the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), an Observer organization of ASEANAPOL, conducted an online Meeting, Presentations, and Networking event with the theme of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Policing Internationally. The presenters for the meeting included:

1. Mirko Daniel Fernandez, LLM, Project Coordinator for the Handbook on Gender-responsive Policing (VAWG), who discussed the topic of Handbook on Gender-Responsive Police Services for Women and Girls Subject to Violence.

2. Police Colonel David Vinluan from the Philippines, serving as the Executive Director of the ASEANAPOL Secretariat.

3. Dr. Joana Cook from Canada, a PhD holder and academic researcher specializing in terrorism and political violence, currently serving as an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA), Leiden University (Netherlands).

4. Mr. Paulo Lino from Brazil, a Cybercrimes Consultant and former member of the Brazilian Federal Police.

Approximately 500 participants from 16 countries attended the online event, including ASEANAPOL Member Countries (Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam), as well as Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Kenya, Kosovo, Mexico, Norway, the UK, and the USA.

The presenters provided valuable insights into the concerning advancements in the modus operandi of organized criminal groups and individuals operating both regionally and globally. These transnational criminal activities pose significant threats to the safety and security of citizens, as well as to environmental sustainability through wildlife crimes. Perpetrators of transnational crimes exploit the volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous, diverse, and disruptive (VUCADD) nature of the situation and other transnational challenges to peace and security. Moreover, their nefarious activities have influenced various aspects of national norms, including political, economic, social, technological, environmental, and legal frameworks.

The online event on AI and Policing Internationally highlighted that law enforcement is changing fast, with global crimes becoming more complex. Police officers must stay alert and flexible, using AI and working together to combat crime. Recognizing how these threats affect society emphasizes the need for proactive approaches and teamwork across borders. By being innovative and building partnerships, we can protect communities and promote safety, security, and justice worldwide.
