ASEANAPOL Secretariat Mourns the Passing of Founding Father Tun Mohammed Hanif bin Omar

On April 20, 2024, the ASEANAPOL Secretariat received the sad news of the passing of Tun Mohammed Hanif bin Omar, one of the five founding fathers of the ASEAN National Police (ASEANAPOL), established in 1981. He served as the 4th Inspector-General of the Royal Malaysia Police from June 1974 to January 1994, becoming the longest-serving Inspector General of Police with a tenure of 20 years. His passing is a tremendous loss not only to his family and his nation but also to the entire ASEAN law enforcement community.
On the same day, Police Colonel David Martinez Vinluan, Executive Director of the ASEANAPOL Secretariat, along with Assistant Commissioner of Police Dr. Bakri Zainal Abidin, Director for Police Services, Police Senior Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Huu Ngoc, Director for Plans & Programmes, and Superintendent Azrul Hisham B. Mohd Shaffei, Head of the Administrative and Technical Section, represented the 10 Chiefs of the ASEAN National Police organizations. They paid their respects to the deceased founder and conveyed condolences to the bereaved family at the Kuala Lumpur National Mosque.
Tun Mohammed Hanif bin Omar was a visionary whose exceptional leadership and dedication were instrumental in the formation and growth of ASEANAPOL. His commitment to enhancing regional security cooperation has paved the way for a safer and more collaborative ASEAN. His legacy will undoubtedly endure, serving as a guiding light for all committed to upholding the ideals he passionately advocated. During this difficult time, our hearts go out to his family, colleagues, and the many individuals touched by his remarkable life and career. We stand together in mourning his loss and celebrating his vast contributions, which have left an indelible impact on our community.
As we honor the memory of Tun Mohammed Hanif bin Omar, we are reminded of his unwavering vision and tireless efforts in fostering unity and collaboration among ASEAN law enforcement agencies. His pioneering spirit and profound contributions will continue to inspire future generations of leaders within ASEANAPOL and beyond. We pledge to continue his legacy of dedication and service, ensuring that his visionary leadership remains alive in the work we do.
