ATTENDING THE CRIME STOPPERS INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

Director for Police Services, DAC Jim Wee, from the Secretariat office was invited by Crime Stoppers International (CSI) to attend its 40^th Annual Conference that was held in Singapore between 14 to 16 Oct 2019.

The background to Crime Stoppers International (CSI), it is a global NGO, civilian based, headquartered in The Hague Netherlands, with a primary mandate of supporting law enforcement agencies to help stop, solve and prevent crime.   It uses the concept of empowering communities to take role in the criminal justice system by pro viding a safe, credible platform to report crime anonymously.

At the current moment, CSI had a long-standing MOU with INTERPOL, UNODC  and currently in collaboration with Cybercrime Directorate of IGCI Singapore on cyber related programs and can be found in the following region:

 Due to its successes over the years since 1976, the CSI enhanced mandate to-date are:

1. Faciliating cooperation amond stakeholders such as government, international agencies, business, law enforcement and the media with respect to helping stop, solve and prevent crime, particularly transnational crime;
2. Facilitating dialogue and cooperation among countries and international business and non-governmental organisations regionally and internationally;
3. Enhancing the capacity of law enforcement and media on the topics of transational crime through training workshops seminars and roundtables;
4. Influencing law enforcement agencies to create specialised teams to investigate reports of transnational crime; and
5. Contributing to the management and sharing of information on transnational crime.

During the period 2019 to 2020, CSI aimed to expand its program into South Asia, with the intial focus on Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Singapore.

The conference theme by CSI this year in Singapore is relating to Cybercrime,  “Partnerships to mitigate cyber threats”; and it invited speakers from both the law enforcement agencies and private entities.  During the said event, Secretariat participated in a panel discussion together with representatives from ICE-Homeland Security Investigations and Western Australia, on ‘Law Enforcement to the Rescue” whereby it is to cover on the global and regional law enforcement response to cybercrime.  

The CSI also shared their keen interest in establishing relation with the Secretariat office and will in due time submit their proposal.  Secretariat will review and submit for all Member Countries’ update once proposal recieved.
