Overview
The Royal Malaysia Police (RMP) or Polis DiRaja Malaysia (PDRM) is the national police force of Malaysia, host of the ASEANAPOL Permanent Secretariat, and one of the founding members of ASEANAPOL.
History
15th Century
Policing in Malaysia traces its origins to the era of the Malacca Sultanate, where law enforcement was carried out through the institutions of the Temenggung and Hulubalang. The Temenggung functioned similarly to a modern police chief, overseeing public order, arresting criminals, and maintaining internal security.
25 Mar 1807
Modern policing officially began following the introduction of the Charter of Justice in Penang under British colonial administration. This marked the establishment of the first formal police organisation in Malaya and is recognised today as the foundation date of the Royal Malaysia Police.
1896
Separate police forces in Selangor, Perak, Negeri Sembilan, and Pahang were consolidated into the Federated Malay States Police Force, with headquarters established at Bukit Aman, Kuala Lumpur.
1940s
Following the Japanese occupation during World War II, the British reorganised the fragmented police system into the Civil Affairs Police Force to restore public order.
1948–1960
During the Malayan Emergency, the police played a crucial role in counterinsurgency operations against the Malayan Communist Party, working closely with military and civil authorities under the Briggs Plan. The Emergency period significantly transformed the force into a professional and intelligence-oriented security institution.
24 Jul 1958
Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Rahman officially bestowed the title "Royal" upon the Federation of Malaya Police Force in recognition of its outstanding service during the Emergency. The organisation thereafter became known as the Royal Federation of Malaya Police.
1963
The formation of Malaysia marked a major milestone when the Royal Federation of Malaya Police merged with the North Borneo Police Force and the Sarawak Constabulary to form the present-day Royal Malaysia Police (RMP).
